Fair Trade

In the interest of promoting sustainable agriculture and improving conditions for indigenous coffee farmers, Mr. Espresso has been a proud supporter of Fair Trade-certified coffees.

What does Fair Trade mean? In the simplest terms, it is an innovative approach to the traditional coffee supply chain aimed at returning a greater share of profit to the grower. Many people are not aware that much of the highest quality coffees - the only kind that Mr. Espresso buys - are grown on small "fincas" high in the mountains. The farmer may only farm four or five acres of land, producing about 2000 pounds of coffees per year.

These growers are very proud of the quality of their produce, and deserve the best price for it. Yet because of the number of intermediate buyers and brokers, the farmer's share has remained unfairly low. Fair Trade endeavors to connect small farmers with the world market in a way that the fruits of their labor are justly rewarded.

Mr. Espresso continues to source other top-quality beans that meet these standards with an eye toward widening our selection of Fair Trade certified coffees. We invite you to join us in the growing effort for fair wages and sustainable farming in developing countries.

Fair Trade is certified by TransFair USA.

Organic

Mr. Espresso strives to purchase organically-grown coffee beans. For example, all of our Fair Trade-certified coffees are organic although the two certifications are not necessarily overlapping.

Organic refers to an agricultural process which strives to strike a balance with our natural environment. It accomplishes this goal by employing methods and materials that will minimize our impact on the land. Organic farmers do not employ pesticides in an effort to maintain the soil's fertility and decrease harmful exposure to toxic exposure to farm workers and also the consumer.

All of our Organic Coffees are also Fair Trade-certified:
Organic Neapolitan Espresso
Organic Special Blend
Organic Decaffeinated Espresso
Organic Decaffeinated Special Blend
Organic French Roast
Organic Golden Gate Blend

Shade Grown Coffee

Mr. Espresso works with our coffee bean suppliers to use shade-grown coffee in our roasts. Shade grown coffee simply refers to an agricultural method which seeks to preserve the natural habitat of coffee plantations.

For many years, coffee beans have been grown on plantations shaded with a diverse array of trees. These trees have given shelter to birds, protected topsoil from erosion, and of course, produced the oxygen and clean air that we need to survive. Mr. Espresso maintains a commitment to our environment in our dedication to bringing you the highest-quality coffee we can find and roast.
