Judging Competitions

September 20-26, 2002 -- John Di Ruocco traveled down to Bolivia this year to judge Arabica coffees available there as part of a program sponsored by USAID/Chemonix to promote this region's emerging harvest. The goal of the trip was to sample Bolivia's offering of organic certified coffees for possible inclusion into specialty roasts. John traveled with a small group of other coffee roasters to La Paz and from there journeyed to the coffee-growing region of Yungas. John was impressed by the great strides that the Bolivian coffee growers have made to improve the quality of their coffee. The growers there still tend to their coffee beans in a traditional manner - employing organic methods in a beautiful shade grown environment. The judges chose the coffee of 10 growers for special recognition - we will let you know when one of these prized products makes it into a Mr. Espresso blend!

October 2001 -- Our own John Di Ruocco participated as a judge in the 2001 Best of Brazil competition sponsored by the Brazil Specialty Coffee Association. The judges chose 18 winners from among a diversity of growers‹large and small farms, men and women growers, all regions and political areas‹to participate in an international auction. The auction is designed to ensure that the finalists are fairly rewarded for their high-quality beans with a market-driven price premium.

Mr. Espresso purchased Brazil Mogiani beans prized for their full-bodied and sweet tones. Mr. Espresso customers will be enjoying them in their next cup of Brazil Santos and premium blends.

October 2001 -- Cafes do Brasil Quality Competition - 2001 Edition. (Sao Paulo, Brazil). John Di Ruocco, our coffee buyer extraordinaire, served as a judge in Brazil's premier coffee event. This year, the judges made a surprise selection of an organic coffee from a small farmer. We already have plans to incorporate his fine beans into our coffees!
